Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, February 12, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

Wednesday, February 12, is to be the big day for GMS. The Gurdon Middle School Student Council assembly will conduct the regular assembly and crown the 1996-97 GMS King and Queen.

Candidates were voted on by each grade and then the four couples were voted on by a penney a vote. The candidates were: fifth grade, Nikia Briscoe and Marcel Johnson; sixth grade, Amber Webb and Zach Turner; seventh grade, Amber Govan and Walter Hart; and eighth grade, Krystel Williams and Wayne House. It has been a lot of fun trying to determine who would win. We are anxious to find out.

The GMS Pep Steppers are sponsoring a Valentine dance Thursday, February 13, for students in the seventh, eighth and ninth grades. This will be held in the GMS gym. Pictures will be taken from 7:00 until 8:00. The dance will be from 8:oo until 11:00. Admission is $2 per person.

We have a student who is not a Razorback fan. I know you probably find this difficult to believe, but it is true. He tries to make Mrs. Gattis feel terrible when the Hogs loose a game. Revenge was in order for that young man and revenge he received. He was given a pop quiz and he failed it, as the questions were absolutely ridiculous. The other students were all in on the trick. Finally, after we thought he had suffered enough, he was told the truth. Can you believe that this student actually called the Hogs for Mrs. Gattis. You have come a long way, Chad.

The students are anxious for the vacation Friday, February 14, and Monday, February 17. It will be really difficult for the teachers to be out of school for that long, but they will just have to endure. Oh, the sacrifices they have to go through.

Mr. Alexander had another birthday, his 60th I think. The teachers had a delicious potluck lunch for the occasion. He seemed to find a reason to be in the lounge most of the morning, guarding the food no less.

Ms. Donna Henderson, State Department employee, presented a most interesting program on teenage pregnancy to the seventh graders. She explained the responsibilities of the father of the child in terms of child support. Several questions were asked and the students really seemed interested in the program.

We have an avid reader among us who keeps the teachers informed of her most recent reading material. We extend thanks to Julia Smithson for keeping us informed.

So much going on and more to come. Just keep reading about us as we continue to make those Classy Moments at GMS.
