Prescott's junior girls have made the first step in defending their district title.

The Cubettes hammered Fouke 33-14 in the first round of the tourney Saturday, Feb. 8, at Fountain Lake.

It was a workman-like game for the Cubettes, as the squad played a solid defense and worked the offense from the killer "D".

In fact, after taking a 9-2 first quarter lead, the game was well in hand for Prescott by halftime as they led 23-4.

Coach Cecily Butler cleared her bench in the third and fourth period as the Cubettes led 29-6 at the end of three and coasted in the final frame.

Traci Graham paced the Cubettes with 15 points, including one three, and a seven for 11 night from the field.

Jeanie Haynie followed with eight pints, seven rebounds and three steals.

Doneshia Williamson was next with four points, while Sunshine Kelly, Rachel Dougan and Trenace Hardman all scored two.

Pilgreen and Duree led Fouke with four each.

The Cubettes were four of six from the line, while Fouke was a perfect four for four.

Butler voiced concern about the girls being too relaxed after having hammered Fouke earlier in the week, 38-16, but was pleasantly surprised when the locker room was quiet and the team had its "game face" on.

"They were intense," Butler said, "and ready to play. I was afraid they'd be too relaxed."

HOPE 25

Butler had reason to be worried about her Cubette team when it played its final regular season game against Hope's Lady Kittens.

She saw her team rally in the final stanza to post a 27-25 victory and post a 16-2 record for the year.

The Cubettes opened with a 9-2 lead, but failed to score in the second period. Hope cut the lead to 9-7 as the half ended.

The Lady Kittens took control of the game in the third quarter as they posted a 17-14 lead, but saw the Cubettes return to form in the final quarter.

Graham led the team with 13 points and five steals. She was also a perfect four of four at the line late in the game.

Haynie scored nine points and pulled down eight boards. Laura Williams had seven rebounds and dished out three assists.

Nelson led Hope with six points.

The Cubettes were five of eight from the stripe, while Hope was three of nine.

"They kept their heads in the crunch," Butler said.

The score was 12-7 at the half, and 14-13 at the end of three.
