Curley Cubs Win In First RoundBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 12, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's Curley Cubs were successful in their first round game of the 7AA District Junior Tournament. Making the trip to Fountain Lake, Saturday, Feb. 8, the Cubs whipped the Bismarck Lion Cubs 45-20 to advance to the semi-final round Thursday. Strong first and third quarters put the Bismarck team on the ropes and out of the tourney. The Cubs opened with a 13-5 score in the first, building this to 19-12 at the half. By the end of three, however, the Cubs were well in control with the score 35-17. Terry Woodley led the Cubs with 11 points, while Matt Brannon added eight. Coy Hasley led Bismarck with six. The Cubs were 10 of 14 from the line, while Bismarck was two of six. PRESCOTT 31 NEVADA 38 The Cubs may have been looking ahead a bit Friday night, Feb. 7, when Nevada visited and handed them a 38-31 loss. Prescott's junior squad was able to post a lead at 11-8 in the first period, but played catchup the rest of the game. Nevada led 23-15 at the half and was up 30-25 after three. Woodley led the Cubs with nine. Keon Page led all scorers with 19 for the Jays. The Cubs were 11 of 24 from the stripe, while Nevada connected on seven of 14 free throws. PRESCOTT 36 HOPE 31 The Cubs began their three games in three days with a 36-31 win over Hope Thursday, Feb. 6. The Cubs played a solid game throughout, opening with an 11-8 lead, and building this to a 23-12 halftime margin. By the end of three, the score was 28-18. Sydney Giles led the Cubs with 10 points, while Brannon added eight. J. Watson paced Hope with 10. The Cubs were 15 of 21 in free throw shooting, while Hope was 10 of 15 at the line.
