Play Set For Nevada

Published Wednesday, February 12, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Tell-A-Tale Troupe of The Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock will perform a tribute to the American heroine Harriet Tubman at the Nevada School at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 27.

Born a slave, Tubman was known as the "Moses of her people," because she led hundreds of slaves to freedom.

She made 19 brave runs via the Underground Railroad, an organized system of escape for slaves to reach safety in the north and in Canada. Later in life, she recalled, "I never ran my train off the track, and I never lost a passenger." This courageous `conductor' stands as a beacon of hope, courage and compassion for children and adults of all cultures.

The role of Tubman is played by Lakeetra Dwionn Lilbert, Paula Isbel plays the roles of Lizabeth and Mary, and G. Scotty Spence appears as Henry, Ben and John. The production is directed by Alan Keith Smith.

Traveling as one of three touring programs available through the Arkansas Arts Center's State Services Department, the Tell-A-Tale troupe travels statewide performing three plays each year. Intended to be both educational and entertaining, the plays are great for audiences of all ages and a wonderful introduction to live theatre performances.

Limited availability remains for this play (touring February 17-March 28) and the next one, The World of Mother Goose (April 7-May 9).

This performance is sponsored locally by the Tri-Service Club and the Nevada School PTO.

All Arts Center touring programs are supported in part by the Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. State Services receives additional program support from the Brown Foundation, Inc., Entergy, Southwestern Bell Foundation, International Paper, Potlatch Corporation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

In addition to the Tell-A-Tale Troupe, the State Services Department also schedules the Artmobile, a 40-foot mobile gallery, and 13 different traveling exhibitions, each containing original works from the Arts Center's permanent collection.

For more information on the Arts Center's touring programs, contact Renee Bearfield, State Services director at 1-800-264-2787.
