Junior Teams End Season With Losses To NashvilleBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 19, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Prescott's junior girls and boys ended their season on a down note. The Cubettes were edged out of the semifinals in the Junior District Tournament 44-41 by Nashville at Fountain Lake. The Curley Cubs also went down to Nashville 42-40 in their game, also played Saturday. Until the third period, the Cubettes were in control, with the game up for grabs. However, they were outscored 16-2 in the third and couldn't recover. The Cubettes opened with a 14-9 lead at the end of one, but were down 21-20 at the break. The disastrous third saw the Scrapperettes take command 37-22, and advance to the finals. Tracy Graham led the Cubettes with 16 points, including a three-pointer. Sunshine Kelly added 12, while Jeania Haynie netted nine. Doneshia Williamson contributed four. Madison led the Nashville offense with 14 points, while Stanley had 12. The Cubettes didn't shoot well from the free throw line either, as they were only four of 13. Nashville, on the other hand, was five of eight at the stripe. "We had a bad practice," Coach Cecily Butler said. "Their intensity level was down." Ironically, the Cubettes had already whipped Nashville three times during the regular season, but it was the Scrapperettes who ended Prescott's season last year. "They (Nashville) were fired up," Butler said, "and shot well. "We had a great season, but a disappointing end." The Cubettes were 17-3 this year, the same record the team had last season. During the game, Graham had six assists and five rebounds. Laura Beth Williams recorded three steals, and Kelly had five boards. However, the Cubettes turned the ball over an uncharacteristically 18 times, mostly unforced errors. Butler shouldered her part of the blame for the loss, saying she waited until the fourth quarter to go into a zone press. The Cubettes won the fourth frame 19-7. CUBS 40 SCRAPPERS 42 A slow first quarter was all it took for the Cubs to see their season come to an end. They were outscored 16-6 by the Scrappers, and were unable to overcome this deficit. By halftime, the lead remained 10, with Nashville ahead 23-13. The Cubs found themselves further behind when the third period was over as the Scrappers were up 35-22. Matt Brannon led the Cubs with 15, while Andrew Fellows contributed 11. Calvin Flemons parked 10, while Terry Woodley was the last Cub to score, with four. McFadden led Nashville with 14.
