Hop-N-Ing Fundraiser Set

Published Wednesday, February 19, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

First Presbyterian Preschool in Prescott is participating in the 13th annual Hop-N-Ing, a special project designed to help young children develop an understanding of disabilities and at the same time raise funds for Easter Seals.

Hop-N-Ing, sponsored by Shoney's Restaurants, Arkla and Arkansas Marking and Labeling Systems, Inc., encourages positive attitudes toward people with disabiities and provides fun for the youngsters. Rehabilitation specialists agree that frequently it's the attitudes of the able-bodied public that handicaps individuals, rather than the disability itself. Materials for the event include disability awareness coloring books and teachers' planning guides.

Children obtain pledges of 5 cents or more from friends and relatives for every hop they make in a three-minute timed period. The school that raises the most money for Easter Seals wins a MacIntosh computer.

For 53 years, the Arkansas Easter Seal Society has helped children and adults with disabilities achieve independence through therapy and the rehabilitation services, technology, education, professional training and advocacy. The organization provides state-wide outreach services in public schools and hospitals, an inpatient rehabilitation program for children, two group living homes for adults, a preschool, a technology resource center, an outpatient therapy program, vocational training and supported employment. Over 99% of the money raised stays in Arkansas to suport these services.
