Prescott's 8/9-Year-Old All Stars Take Second In State

Published Wednesday, September 1, 1999 in the Nevada County Picayune

Last year Prescott did a first. The Little League sent a group of 8- and 9-year-olds to the district All-Star Tournament in Sparkman.

The players gained a lot of experience. The coaches could see the kind of talent the players possessed and the potential each had.

The experience was valuable as this year's team came in second in the district, behind the talented Fordyce team. The district games this year were played in Fordyce.

Wanting a championship this year, the Prescott team defeated Bismarck, 12-0, and the team was on its way.

Returning the next night these boys faced a tough group of youngsters from Smackover. The pitching lineup from Smackover was just a little more than Prescott players could handle. They lost, 8-6. This placed Prescott in the losers' bracket.

Now the talent had to toughen up and show just what All-Stars are made of.

Playing the next game against Gurdon, Prescott won this game with its defense.

Next Prescott faced Bearden. The Prescott team rattled the bats during this game, scoring 20 runs to the opponent's five. This brought Prescott to the finals of the loser bracket and a match-up again with Smackover.

Determined to repay Smackover for the lose they had sustained earlier in the week, this group of All-Stars stepped up to face the challenge. After a long game of six innings, Prescott came out victorious, 7-5. This win placed Prescott against Fordyce, the returning champs for several years.

Fordyce had 10 All-Stars from last year's team, making for a tough group of youngsters. Prescott went down, 9-2.

But no matter the loss, they had done something no other 9- and 10-year-old team from Prescott had ever done before. They were the runners-up in the district 1B Tournament.
