Atkins Part Of SAU Squad

Published Wednesday, February 26, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

Jennie Atkins, a six-foot sophomore, is a member of the 1996-97 Southern Arkansas University Riderette basketball team.

When SAU needed help last season, Atkins, then a freshman, walked on and gave the Riderettes needed depth.

Atkins played high school basketball for coach Glyndon Franklin and the Nevada Lady Blue Jays.

In the eighth grade, she was the defensive player of the year. She was named the most valuable player in the ninth grade, was the offensive player of the year in the 10th and 11th grades, was all-district as a junior and senior, and was named all-region as a senior.

As a Riderette, Atkins has played in 21 games, starting in three, including the last two. She averages 10 minutes a game and has scored 30 points, grabbed 21 rebounds, has seven steals and has made six of nine free throws.

Atkins is undecided on a major.

Her parents are Derrell and Anna Atkins of Waldo.
