PHS To Take Track InsidePublished Wednesday, February 26, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayunePart of the 1997 track and field squad will get a taste of that championship feeling as they compete in the annual ATCA State Indoor Track and Field Meet at the University of Arkansas indoor facility on Friday, according to coach Eddie Jackson. The Class AA, A and B field events will begin at 4:30 p.m. and the running events get underway at 6:00 p.m. The AAA and AAAA divisions will compete on Saturday morning. The Wolves will not be in full force, so the anticipated showdown between Stamps, Prescott and Nashville may be put on hold until the outdoor state meets on May 10. "Those reasons," according to Jackson, "include: 1)+the basketball players are doing such a great job and will be involled in post-season play, hopefully for several more days; 2)+the wet weather has limited the Wolves running workouts; 3)+some excellent track athletes are not committed to the challenge as seniors at PHS have traditionally been in the past; and 4)+the new off-season football rules allows more football work so our limited football staff has tried to take advantage of this work time before our local policies restrict our football work." In spite of these factors, Jackson said he would make sure that if any young man wants to compete, he would have that opporunity. Even though the team will be in partial force, there could be a few bright spots this early in the season, Jackson said. "Each individual understands this is strictly a voluntary matter, because they are paying their own way and because of the factors listed above," Jackson said. If some people choose to compete the scouting report for the different areas would include: Shot put --T. Burton, V. Vanhook and J. Yates: "We should get points here." Long jump -- C. Hopson and T. Stafford: "Have a chance to score." Pole vault -- J. Morrow, B. Jordon and J. Kisselburg: "This will be a tough event but we could score." High jump: "Not sure." 55 hurdles: "Possible points here." 55-200-400: C. Hopson, T. Stafford, C. Vanhook, and others: "Could pick up a few point in these events." 800-1600-3200: "The Wolves may not be ready for these distances." 4x800 and 4x400 relays: "Prescott owns the state record in both relays. We may not be able to defend these titles, but we will compete hard if the manpower is there." Results from this championship meet and a schedule of the outdoor season will be in next week's edition. The senior and junior teams are scheduled to start the outdoor season at Nashville on March 4 and 6th. "These events may be cancelled depending on how our basketball teams do in the regional tourney," Jackson concluded. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
