Lady Blue Jays Fall In Semi-FinalsBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 26, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Nevada's senior girls will be making a trip to the regional tournament in Dierks today. This, after they managed to post a victory in the district tourney held at Nevada High School last week. However, the Lady BlueJays lost in the semi-final game against the Lady Roadrunners of Stephens, 44-40. The Lady Jays simply couldn't keep pace with Stephens, as they found themselves on the short end of a 13-8 first quarter score in Wednesday's game. By halftime, the Stephens crew was up 26-16, and led 32-25 after three. The Lady Jays rallied in the fourth, but ran out of time before coming up with enough points to advance. Ramona Evans led the Lady Jays with 11 points, while Anita Loudermill contributed 10. Stephens was led by Kasey Porchia's 16. Denise Torrence netted 14. Neither team did well from the free throw line. Nevada was two of 10, with Stephens only connecting on 10 of 28 attempts. NEVADA 41 STAMPS 26 The Lady Jays opened tournament play well, with a 41-26 win over Stamps Monday, Feb. 17. Though Nevada got off to a slow start, the Lady Jays were able to control the game from the outset. At the end of the first eight minutes of play, Nevada led 9-4. They administered the knockout punch in the second period as they took a 21-9 lead to the locker room at the break. The Lady Jays called off the attack somewhat in the third frame, but were still in command with the score 30-13. Evans was again the leading scorer for Nevada with 11. Rachel Dockery paced Stamps with nine. The Lady Jays shot better from the stripe in this game, as they converted 10 of 14 attempts. Stamps was six of 14 in free throw attempts. REGIONAL TOURNEY The Lady Jays will hit the hardwood tonight at 7 as they represent the 7A Central conference as the fourth place team. They will play the winner of the 7A West -- Caddo Hills. Wednesday's action opens at 4 p.m. with the 7A Central second place team, Gurdon, playing the third seed from 7A West, Dierks. Thursday's games in the girls' bracket sees the winner in 7A Central, Stephens will play Horatio at 4 p.m., while Lewisville and Glenwood take to the court at 7 p.m. Wednesday's winners return to the floor at 4 p.m. Friday, while Thursday's victors hit the hardwood at 7 Friday night. Friday's winners meet at 7 Saturday night. Only the top two from the regionals in Class A will go to the state tourney, which will be held in Judsonia at White County Central High School.
