NHS Boys Fall In Double OvertimeBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, February 26, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Nevada's senior boys gave it everything they had Wednesday in the semi-finals of the 7A Central District Tournament, but came up short. It took a double-overtime for Stephens to edge the Jays 78-71 and advance to the finals Saturday night. For three quarters, the Roadrunners were able to stay one step ahead of the Jays. At the end of the first quarter, Stephens led 18-12. By halftime, they were up 36-31, as the Jays refused to go away. When the third period ended, Stephens remained ahead at 47-42. Then came the fourth stanza. The Jays left everything they had on the floor to tie the game at 58-58 when regulation play ended. The two squads stood toe-to-toe in the first overtime set, with neither able to administer the knockout punch. When the buzzer sounded ending the first OT, the score remained deadlocked at 65-65. Stephens had too much depth for Nevada in the second overtime, and was able to pull away for the win. Joseph Young led the Jays with 24 points, while Ricardo Young added 15. Julius Gulley contributed 12 to the cause as well. Kenneth Jones paced Stephens with 20, as the first of four Roadrunners in double figures. Brandon Glover netted 14, Brodick Heard scored 12 and Reggie Todd had 10. The Jays were able to nail down 14 of 20 free throws, while Stephens hit 27 of 41 attempts from the line. NEVADA 73 LEWISVILLE 57 The Jays secured a slot in the regional tournament with a 73-57 win over the Lewisville Red Devils in Tuesday's game. In fact, the Devils took a 15-13 lead at the end of one, but saw the Jays tie the score at 32-32 by halftime. The Jays took control in the third by pulling to a 49-43 advantage. Though Coach Glyndon Franklin cleared the bench, three Jays managed to score in double figures. Casey Curtis led the team with 15, while Gulley netted 13. Courtney Mixon was next with 10. Derrick Anderson led all scorers in the game with 21 for the Devils. Lonnie Hamilton added 15, with Edward Johnson sinking 12.
