Charles Arthur CrowePublished Wednesday, August 4, 1999 in the Gurdon TimesCharles Arthur Crowe, Col. USA-Ret, died at his home in Carlisle, Penn., on May 19,1999. Col. Crowe was born in Little Rock. He was a 1945 graduate of Gurdon High School and a 1951 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy. His service included Artillery Forward Observer in Korea, 1952-53; director of Joint Plans and Operations for the U.S. Mil Group in Argentina, 1966- 68; Commander, 8th Artillery Battalion, 25th Inf. Div. in Vietnam, 1969-70; and Commander, U.S. Military Group in Honduras, 1974-77. Col Crowe's final assignment prior to retirement in 1978 was Chief of Office Training and Evaluation, Headquarters, 1st Army. Combat awards included the Legion of Merit, three Bronze Stars for Valor and two Air Medals. Col. Crowe received his MA in journalism from the University of Florida in 1959 and he graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1962, the Armed Forces Staff College in 1965, and the U.S. Army War College in 1972. In addition to teaching at the Army Information School from 1959 to 1961, he served as information officer at USMA 1962-65, and as an instructor, Army War College 1972-74. After leaving active duty, his career included nuclear protection officer for the state of Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency 1978-81; senior emergency planner, NUS Corp 1981- 82; emergency preparedness coordinator, Shoreham Nuclear Power Station, Long Island, N.Y., 1982-84: project manager, NUTECH Engineers in Bethesda, Md., 1984-86; and consultant and marketing manager, Schneider/EC Planning and Management Services 1986-88. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, the former Joan Miller of Amityville, N.Y.; two daughters, Leigh Ann Spencer of Denver, Colo., and Allison Crowe Reavey of Boston, Mass.; one son, Charles of Rockville, Penn.; and five grandchildren. His mother, Georgia, and one sister, Celia Ann Roe of Dallas, Texas, also survive him. He was the son of the late Charles Henry Crowe of Gurdon. Internment will be August 9 at West Point, N.Y.
