Extension Service Wants Interested Parties To CallPublished Wednesday, March 5, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesBees, particularly honey bees, are greatly valued in American agriculture. They pollinate many important crops which provide seed used to grow food for both man and livestock. Due to several influences, bee populations have greatly declined and wild bees are almost entirely wiped out. You have probably heard about the mites that are affecting honey bees. We also need to be aware of bee activity before using pesticides especially Sevin and Malathion. If spraying must be done, use the least toxic chemical and avoid bloom periods when bees are working. Wanted: Persons interested in bee-keeping class in the Arkadelphia ares. The class will be conducted in four sessions on succeeding Monday nights. Subject covered will include: Getting Started, Equipment and Materials, Bee Colony Behavior, Spring Management, Diseases and Pests, Honey Plants and Pollination, Honey Management, Other Hive Products and Winter Preparation, and the Business Side of Bee-keeping.
