Handbell Choir Makes Trip To Little RockPublished Wednesday, March 5, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesGurdon's First United Methodist Church Ladies' Handbell Choir recently attended the Arkansas State Handbell Festival in Little Rock. The festival drew approximately 35 handbell choirs from throughout the state. The Gurdon church has participated in the event for the past eleven years. Dr. Jim Smith of Longview, Texas, served as guest clinician. Dr. Smith, a retired Presbyterian Church musician and college professor, is also published composer and arranger. The day was spent in mass rehearsal of previously learned pieces and conducted with an afternoon concert. The local ringers enjoyed dinner at Bennigans. Those attending the festival from the Gurdon were Joyce Taylor, Debri Davies, Judy Landers, Patricia Childers, Jennifer Gates, LaDawne Simpson, Edna Jordon, Lena Simpson, Judy Hittenrauch, Elizabeth Wilson and Jerry Childers, director.
