Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, March 5, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

We are so excited about the news of Cabe Foundation giving us the $200,000 grant to be used to build a new Gurdon Middle School. We were so disappointed when the millage did not pass, but now we are looking forward to the new building that will be `ours.' We just want to say thank you to the Cabe Foundation for caring and concern for our future, as well as for students for years to come.

As difficult as it is to believe, February is now in the past. Time just seems to be flying by. It seems only a few days ago that wer were getting out for Christmas. The third nine weeks period will end March 7. This school year is only nine weeks away from being over.

Thursday, March 13, will be parent-teachers conferences. This will start at 2:30 and end at 7:00. We look forward to the parents coming to talk to their child's teachers. Report cards will be given to the parents who attend the conferences. We would be trilled if we had 100% of the parents to come for that event.

We are go glad the dressing rooms on each side of the stage in the auditorium are being painted. So many things were written on the walls and now all that is covered up with paint. We want to keep the walls nice and do ask that no one write on them. Let us take pride in the building, as the auditorium is used for community activities as well as school functions.

Basketball season is over for the junior high teams, but track is now in season. Some students are in more than one sport, while others are only in one. Of course, some do not participate in sports, but make up the cheering section, which is very important.

The Junior Beta Club members had lunch at the Pizza Hut on their way to Hot Springs for an afternoon of bowling. The sponsors, Mrs. Bullard and Mrs. Karr, had excellent reports of the behavior of the students while on the trip. The students had a fun time and would love to go again.

Students having birthdays in February were served a piece of the birthday cake Wednesday, February 26. Each month a birthday cake is served to those observing a birthday for that month. They check the birthday calender in the hall be be sure names have not been omitted and then on their way to the lunch room, they get their name tags from Mrs. Blanton so they can get their cake. This is follow-up from the COE Committee High Expectations. The students really enjoy this treat.

"Caught Being Good" coupons will be drawn Monday from each grade. Students caught being good by a teacher will be given a coupon with their name on it to be placed in the "drawing jar" for a $20 gift certificate from Wal-Mart. Caught Being Good is being caught doing something out of the ordinary, or very special for another student or teacher. Teachers are given a certain number of coupons to give to students.

Several girls went to the meeting for cheerleader for the next school year. This was just to get permission slips and information about the try outs, which will be March 21. The cheerleaders did an excellent job this year and we do appreciate them. A big thanks you to their sponsor, Mrs. Purifoy.

Since we had to miss a day of school due to the snow, we will make that day up March 14. That date was to be a `bad weather day' on our calender to be used only if we had a day to make up and if not it would have been a day out for us. So, remember March 14 will be a school day in Gurdon.

Busy, busy, and lots more to come. Continue your interest and concern as we make those Classy Moments at GMS!
