Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, March 12, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesWhen we arrived to school Monday, March 3, we had about half of the lunch room flooded. We were able to get breakfast served by making a few adjustments. In fact we made a bad situation turn into one of "not so bad." This is just one of the many times we have to do things like that, as we don't allow defeat to take charge. We were so saddened to learn of the dmaage in our county and that of some of our own friends. We do realize how fortunate we are to have not had the worse of the storm. However, our hearts go out to those who lost loved ones and suffered such property damage or total lost of material possessions. The GMS Student Council sponsored a drive for `school supplies' for the students at Arkadelphia who lost so much in the storm. Two boxes of supplies were delivered to be distributed. Our students responded with such caring attitudes of helping other students either by bringing supplies or money to make purchases of supplies. We have wonderful students at GMS. Fifty-four fifth and sixth grade GT students and seventh and eight grade advanced English classes went to the Arkansas Arts Center Children's Theater in Little Rock Friday. They were entertained with a live production of `Ramona Quimby.' After the performance, the students enjoyed a treat they had looked forward to -- lunch! Now, we believe that our students are the best in the world, and the manager of the restaurant where they had lunch confirmed our belief. The students were given the compliment of being the best group he had had in the restaurtant, as they were polite and said "Thank you" and "Please." Also, he said to pass the word on to each teacher that they were doing something right. That is great! We want to pass the word on to the parents and to the community. A big thank you to Mrs. Baumgardner and Mrs. Downey for coordinating the trip. The GMS Student Council will present the monthly assembly Tuesday, March 18, at 1:15, due to spring break the following week. We extend a personal invitation to you to come and watch OM (Odyssy of the Mind) teams perform and hear from some of the high school students who attended Close-Up in Washington, D.C. Thursday, March 13, will be parent-teacher conferences from 2:30 until 7:00. We look forward to your visit. Mrs. Clingin is very proud of her OM team's performance. Although they came in fifth place out of 13, to her they are number one. The kids worked hard and performed with no flaws. Cast members were Lyndi Esclanate, a carpenter with an enlarged foot and hand; J.T. Tarpley, who played a female that even fooled the judges; Brad Branson, a nerd; Jake Plyler, a woman with a terrible cough and the veterianarian; and Ashleigh Redfearn, a skunk. They deserved the Oscar. We started the last nine weeks of school. Our spring break will be March 24-28. As time seems to be flying by for us, we do want you to know that we are busy as we can be making those Classy Moments at GMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
