Thurman Sidney GatesPublished Wednesday, March 19, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesThurman Sidney Gates, 66, of Arkadelphia died Tuesday, March 11, 1997, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock. He was born October 16, 1930, in Gurdon. The son of the late Theron and Clara Sowell Gates, he was a retired maintenance supervisior for the Arkadelphia Public Schools, a member of Second Baptist Church, a Korean navy veteran, a member of the Arkadelphia Bass Club and a Civitan. Survivors include his wife, Billie Jean Williams Gates; one son, Douglas Gates of Cabot; one daughter, Valerie Gates of Arkadelphia; and two grandchildren, Daniel Sandford Gates and David Sidney Gates. Funeral services were Friday, March 14, at First United Methodist Church in Arkadelphia with Rev. Gary Turner and Dr. Shelby Cowling officiating. Interment was in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens under the directin of Murry-Ruggles Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church Building Fund.
