Hope Watermelon Festival This Weekend At Fair Park

Published Wednesday, August 11, 1999 in the Gurdon Times

The 23rd annual Hope Watermelon Festival is set for August 12 through 15 in Hope's Fair Park.

The festival is expected to draw 50,000 people over a four-day period.

Over 200 arts and crafts booths will be in place and there will be a variety of music presented over a 4-day period, including country, blues, southern gospel, western swing, bluegrass and rock.

This year's special guest for southern gospel concert on Sunday will be Harold Gilley and Southern Gold.

The festival will feature many of the time-honored events, which have become so popular, including seed-spitting, watermelon eating and other melon-related events. The festival will also feature a melon auction on Saturday, August 14, which will allow those bidding the chance to buy one of the big melons featured at the festival.

There are many other events set for this year's festival. These include the Kiwanis Chicken supper, the Lions Club Fish Fry, the Watermelon Olympics, a bass tournament on Lake Millwood sponsored by Tri-County Bass Club, a baseball/sports card show and the 5k run.

Other events will be the Rusty Wheels Antique Engine Club, and a vintage bike show for motorcycles sponsored by the ABATE motorcycle group. An antique car show is also planned.

For information, call 870-777-3640 or visit the festival at its e-mail address:
