CLASSY MOMENTSPublished Wednesday, March 26, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesI apologize for not having an article in last week's paper and I appreciate your calls concerning `the missing news.' I do enjoy sharing the news of GMS with you each week and I certainly appreciate the Gurdon Times for allowing me the opportunity. The GMS Student Council conducted its assembly for the month, and a wonderful time was enjoyed by all. Jackie Ledbetter, Terry Brown, and Melanie Wilson shared some of their experiences while on the Close Up trip to Washington. It is always good to hear from our former GMS students. The two Odyssey of the Mind teams performed their skits. Mrs. Polly Ferguson's team of Heath Griffin, Tracy Coplen and Zach Turner did a super job of entertaining the audience. Mrs. Clingan's team of Brad Branson, J.T. Tarpley, Lyndi Esclante, Ashleigh Redfern and Jake Plyler performed like professionals. Certificates of accomplishments were given to each team member. An international student from OBU held the audience spellbound. He spoke five languages, wore wooden shoes and answer several questions students asked. He just made himself right at home and put us to ease and made it feel like we were talking to an old friend. He had excellent advice for students: "Be happy with what you have." We would love to have him come back again for a longer visit. Citizen students were fifth grade: Carrie Gibson, sixth grade: Christina Taylor, seventh grade: Tabitha Manely, and eighth grade: Jodi Purifoy. These students are recommended by their teachers. Mrs. Hitt's seventh and eighth grade choir won superior rating at the Southwest Regional and enough cannot be said for the accomplishment of these students. She brings out the talent they did not know they had. Such beautiful music they make. We had an extra special treat when the Power Team came to see us. One team member was one of our former GMS students, Trey Talley. Mrs. Clingan did not recognize him when she saw him, as he had gain about 200 muscle pounds. They showed their strength by tearing a Little Rock phone book in half, blowing up a water bottle until it explored, lifted two students as they held on to an iron bar, squeezed a pop can until it blew up, broke bricks with their heads and hands, and several other unbelievable feats, unless you saw for yourself. We are saddended about coach Kizer's illness. He is greatly missed. We are thinking about you, coach, and our prayers are with you. We thank every parent who came for the parent-teacher conferences. We always enjoy having the opportunity to talk about our kids. We are looking forward to spring break, which is this week. We go back to school Monday, March 31, and at that time we will be making those Classy Moments at GMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
