Area Students Win Honors, AwardsPublished Wednesday, March 26, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesTOP SPELLERS -- These three students with Gurdon Middle School represented their alma mater well in the Clark County Spelling Bee recently. Brad Branson, left, holds the first place trophy he brought home as the champion. Kenneth O'Connell, center, finished second, while Lindette Kadiri came in fourth in the competition. STUDENTS OF THE MONTH -- These four Gurdon High School students were tabbed as Students of the Month for March at GHS. They are: from left, Whitney Hogue, freshman; Andrew Smallwood, sophomore; Kelly Purifoy, junior; and Tommy Otwell, senior. REBUILDING -- Construction crews work to put a new roof on Fred Conine's business in downtown Arkadelphia after the March 1 tornadoes heavily damaged the building. In fact, the cleanup operations in the city are going well, with much of the debris moved out of the way and the streets cleared. However, it will take some time before Arkadelphia is completely rebuilt and the wounds of the killer storms healed. TOP NOTCH -- These five members of the Gurdon Lady Go-Devil basketball team were honored for their efforts on the hardwood this past season. From left, Tameka Hatley earned an All District Honorable Mention, while Wanda Cornish was named All District. Alicia Clayborn not only was named All District, but was tabbed All State as well. LaVonda Young garnered an HM for All District, while April Simpson was named All District. MORE HONORS -- These three players with the Gurdon Go-Devil basketball team had accolades heaped on them as well for their 1996-97 campaign on the hardcourt. Eric Hatley was named All District, All Region and All State for his contributions, while Corey Marsh was named to the All District and All Region team.
