Assistance Following Storms Is Available

Published Wednesday, March 26, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

Farms and ranches suffering severe damage from the tornado that passed through the state on March 1 may be eligible for assistance under the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP) administred by the Hempstead-Nevada County Farm Service Agency.

You may be eligible if the damage is so costly to rehabilitate that federal assistance is or will be needed to return the land to productive agricutlure use.

A producer qualifying for ECP assistance may receive cost-share levels not to exceed 64 percent of the eligible cost of restoration measures. The maximum is $200,000 per person per disaster.

The following types of measures may be eligible: removing debris from farmland; grading, releveling or similar measures; restoring permanent fences; restoring conservation structures; and other similar installations.

To be eligible for assistance, practices must not be started until an application for cost shares has been filed and an on site inspection has been made.

For further information, contact the Hempstead-Nevada FSA at 1802 North Hervey in Hope, or call 777-3764.
