A father and son were arrested following an altercation with the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, Friday, March 21.

According to Jim Westmoreland, criminal investigator with the NCSO and Prescott Police Department, deputy Thomas Goad was notified of a suspicious vehicle in the woods off Highway 32.

When the officer arrived at the scene, he saw a suspect lying on the hood of a car. Upon questioning the man, Goad learned it was Gary L. Poindexter, 36, of Emmet, and the suspect was armed.

Goad told Poindexter to put the weapon down, with him complying after backing away in a "rapid" manner. However, the suspect, after slamming the semiautomatic handgun on the trunk of the car, turned and fled into the woods.

Russell Daniels, a reserve officer who was with Goad at the time, called for backup, after learning the suspect was armed. Deputies Wayne Kisselburg, Bernard Box and Jason Arrington, along with reserve officers Jerry Reeves and Larry Miller responded.

Reeves and Miller became involved in an altercation with Wilbur Poindexter, 69, of Emmet, near his home. Wilbur, Gary's father, heard the officers and apparently went to help his son.

When the officers wouldn't allow him to go to the scene, he went to his truck and got a pump shotgun.

But, before the weapon was removed from the pickup, the officers placed the elder Poindexter under arrest.

Gary Poindexter was charged with felon in possession of a firearm and fleeing. His father was charged with aggravated assault. Both were released on $2,500 bond each.

BURGLARY

Miller's Grocery, on Highway 371 northwest of Prescott, was burglarized sometime Sunday evening or early Monday morning, Westmoreland said.

Entry to the business was gained through the front door, with cigarettes, candy and an undetermined amount of cash taken.

Westmoreland asks anyone seeing a vehicle in the area during this time period to call him at the NCSO at 887-2616.

DRUG BUST

Acting on a call from the Arkansas State Police, Sheriff Steve Otwell stopped a Mercury driven by a Hispanic male on Interstate 30.

The NCSO had gotten a call from the ASP concerning a possible drunk driver. When Otwell stopped the car investigated for DWI, then arrested Eloy Alaniz, 23, of Hot Springs after finding several suspicious substances.

Alaniz was charged with possession of a controlled substance, crystal methamphetamines, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Depending on the results of tests ran at the Arkansas Crime Lab, he could face other charges.
