Military NewsPublished Wednesday, April 2, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneArmy Pvt. Wendy D. Gulley has entered basic military training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the eight weeks of training, the soldiers will study the army mission and will receive instruction in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, first aid, army history and traditions, and special training in human relations. Gulley is the daughter of Arizona and Lazarus Gulley of Rosston and is a 1994 graduate of Nevada High School in Rosston. Marine Pvt. Charles D. Zeigler, son of Rosemary McGee of Rosston, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Calif. Zeigler successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new marine recruits physically and mentally. Zeigler and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a.m. by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition to the physical conditioning program, Zeigler spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments, which included learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training. They performed close order drill and operated as a small infantry unit during field training. Zeigler and other recruits also received instruction on the U.S. Marine Corps' core values -- honor, courage and commitment, and what the words mean in guiding personal and professional conduct. Zeigler and fellow recruits ended the training phase with The Crucible, a 54-hour team effort, problem solving evolution which culminated with an emotional ceremony in which the recriuts were presented the Marine Corps Emblem, and were addressed as "Marines" for the first time since boot camp began. Zeigler joins 41,000 men and women who will enter the U.S. Marine Corps this year from all over the country. He is a 1996 graduate of Nevada High School. Air Force Senior Airman Aaron M. Phillips has been named maintainer of the year. Selection was based on the individual's exemplary duty performance, job knowledge, leadership qualities, significant self-improvement and other accomplishments. The airman is a computer maintenance journeyman with the 81st Maintenance Squadron at Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Miss. Phillips is the son of retired Maj. David W. Phillips and Judy G. Phillips of Emmet. His wife, Ann, is the daughter of William and Marie Taylor of Panama City, Fla. He is a 1991 graduate of Rutherford High School in Panama City.
