Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, April 9, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesWell, as you already know, we had a week off for spring break and we returned to school with eager students. So many of them seemed glad to get back in school and that really made the teachers feel great. However, there were those who thought time was too short for spring break. Come to think about it, they probably were the teachers. We have completed three weeks of the last nine weeks period. I have said it before, but, honestly, time just seems to be flying by. The Beta Club sponsored basketball games between the fifth and sixth graders last week. This week will have the seventh and eighth graders playing. The proceeds of the game+ will to coach Randy Kizer and his family. We saw a lot of good talent in those fifth and sixth graders and would not be surprised if some professional scouts attended. We were entertained with a presentation of `The Night Harry Stopped Smoking,' performed by actors from Wildwood Park Performing Arts. It gave the serious dangers of what smoking could do to a person, as well as to those who are around smokers. We appreciated the Ross Foundation and the Cabe Foundation for providing this excellent source of information in such an easy understandable way. We have missed eighth grade students Vanesha Young and Matthew Lynch. Vanesha had knee surgery and Matthew had his tonsils removed. Although both students try to keep up with their school work while recuperating, they are greatly missed in school. We survived April Fool's Day, but at times we did experience some doubt. Mr. Alexander really enjoyed the day, as he found time to fool a lot of students (all in fun). The teachers seemed to be glad when the last bell for the day was heard, as they had been tested most of the day. Thursday, April 10, at 9 a.m. the primary school students will attend a program about Sleeping Beauty as it is presented with puppets as the main characters. This program comes highly recommended to the GMS Student Council, which will be sponsoring the presentation. You, too, are invited to come to the auditorium and enjoy the programm. Four score and seven years is being heard in various places in the building, as Mrs. Clingan has her eighth grade history students reciting the famous Gettysburg address. Can you believe she won't allow them to have the written speech in hand while reciting. Of course, she wants each word to be the same as when the speech was delivered by Abraham Lincoln in 1863. She has confidence in each student. The eighth graders attended CHAMPS conducted at Beech Street Baptist Church. Several students returned with names and addresses of students they met from other schools. Mrs. Franklin, Gurdon Middle School counselor, arranged the day for them and it was a great time for all. Mrs. Bullard assisted Mrs. Franklin. With all of the eighth graders gone for the day, those of us remaining at the building decided it has to be the eighth graders who make most of the noise, as it certainly was quite in the halls. We have a busy week ahead of us. We do appreciate your concern for us as we continue to make those Classy Moments at GMS. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
