Study On Arkansas Indians Completed

Published Wednesday, April 9, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The fourth grade classes at Nevada Elementary recently completed a study of the early Arkansas Indians.

For the culminating activity, `Arts-in-Education' artist, Susan Sanders helped the classes with some Indian art. Sanders taught the students some drawing techniques such as wing horizon lines, showing distance in drawing and drawing the human face. The students drew Indian village scenes and an Indian chief.

The classes also had the wonderful experience of working with white clay. The students shaped bowls called Indian pinch pots. Each child chose an animal and shaped its head on the pot. They were then fired and later painted with acrylic paint.

The Arts-in-Education program brings artists into the classsroom to work with the students. It is funded by the Arkansas Arts Council, the Rosemary Rhea Endowment, Quota International of Magnolia and participating schools, including the Nevada School and the Nevada PTO.

Drawings and pottery made by the Nevada students and those of other particpating schools will be on display at the Rosemary Rhea Regional AIE Gallery in the curriculum center at Southern Arkansas University from April 14 through May 16.
