Artmobile To Visit Area

Published Wednesday, April 9, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Arkansas Arts Center's Artmobile, a 40-foot mobile gallery containing original works of art from the permanent collection, will visit Prescott April 14 through 18.

Sponsored by Potlatch, the exhibit will also be open to the public on Thursday, April 17.

Students at the Prescott Public Schools will tour the exhibit during the week.

The Artmobile features an all-new exhibit entitled Poetry in Drawing: Prints, Drawings and Artists' Books which include framed works and books by 25 artists including two from Arkansaas.

The Artmobile will be open to the general public in Prescott on Thursday, April 17, at Prescott High School from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.

"It brings me great pleasure that Potlatch is able to offer this unique opportunity to Prescott," Brad Fountain, manager of the Ozan Unit, said. "Children of all ages will enjoy this exhibit of prints and drawings. Touring the Arkansas Arts Center's Artmobile will be a special learning experience for everyone."

The Artmobile's current exhibit was organized by the Arts Center's curatorial staff who selected works that demonstrated artists consciously incorporating words and themes from literature into their drawings.

"Artists are often very well read and often derive their inspiration from a poem, novel or play," said Ruth Pasquine, curator of art at the Arts Center. "The expressive aims of poets and artists are quite similar and can be demonstrated through a discussion of the common vocabulary of both disciplines. The old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words points to the interdependency of visual and verbal communication.

"The decision to do an exhibition for the Artmobile that showed the various ways 20th century artists have been inspired by the written word was based on the current interests in interdisciplinary studies in schools," Pasquine said. "The exhbiition with its accompanying curriculum materials should provide a lively exchange between teachers and students of art literature in Arkansas schools."
