President Bush To Speak At Harding UniversityPublished Wednesday, April 9, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneFormer President George Bush will be speaking on the Harding University campus April 24 as a part of the university's American Studies Institute Distinguished Lecture Series. Bush began his political career as a U.S. representative in 1966 where he was one of the first freshmen members chosen to serve on the Ways and Means Committee. Two years later he was re-elected to the House without opposition. During the 70s he held a number of important leadership positions, including U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations and chairman of the Republican National Convention. In 1980, Ronald Reagan and Bush were elected to the offices of president and vice president for the first of two terms. In 1988 Bush became the Republican Party's nomination for president, and was consequently elected 41st president of the United States. Bush will be speaking in the Benson Auditorium. His lecture will last 30 minutes and will be followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session when he will take audience member's question. To date, all of the 3,600 complimentary tickets for the event have been distributed, but after 5 p.m. on the day of the event the Benson Auditorium ticket holders are requested to be seated by 7:15; the lecture is set to begin at 7:30. Accomodations are being made for those who do not have tickets;./ Closed-circuit television will broadcast Bush's lecture to two additional auditoriums on campus.
