Finances Cause Granny's Walk (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, August 11, 1999 in the Gurdon Times look forward to each and every day, but it's hard to say goodbye to the people I meet. I get to know them and have to leave. "I miss home, my family and friends." On the other hand, Granny D is becoming a walking billboard. Wherever she goes a local leader presents her with either a t-shirt, cap or something. The t-shirts are worn during the walk, while most of the rest gets packed away in the van her son drives behind her. Most of the breakable items, she said, are shipped home. "I'll have a room in my house for mementos." Some of these mementos include a commendation from the House of Representatives, a letter from President Bill Clinton, but nothing from the Senate as the chair didn't see fit to recognize Granny D's efforts. Granny D prefers walking through small towns, as her home town has a population of 1,400. Small towns are easier for her to get through as there is less traffic and the people tend to be more helpful. While she has a long way to go before reaching her goal of Washington, D.C. by Jan. 24, 2000, there is little doubt she will not succeed in her effort as Granny D has a will of iron and constitution to match.
