Beekeeping Class Planned

A beekeeping class will be held in Arkadelphia during May.

Held four different weeks, the class will be held between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. on May 1, 8, 22 and 29 at the Clark County Fairgrounds.

The instructor will be Ed Levi, State Apiary inspector.

A fee of $15 per participant will be charged. The fee will also cover the cost of the textbook, `Honey Bees and Beekeeping' by Dr. Keith Delaplane.

Fees and applications can be handled on site on May 1.

Subjects covered will include Getting Started; Equipment and Materials; Bee and Colony Behavior; Spring Management; Diseases and Pests; Honey Plants and Pollination; Honey Management; Other Hive Products; and Winter Preparation and the Business Side of Beekeeping.

As the season progresses, there will be a field trip or two dealing with starting a colony; replacing queens; controlling swarms; making splits; inspecting and treating for diseases and pests; facilitating honey production; and harvesting and extracting honey.
