Classy MomentsPublished Wednesday, April 16, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesThe GMS Beta Club sponsored the seventh and eighth grade basketball teams in a big fun time for all of us Friday. Wow, we do have a lot of talent as some of those students looked like pros. Mr. Alexander was officiating the games, at least he was having a good time running up and down the court blowing his whistle, as though anyone was paying any attention to him. It was a fun time and the proceeds of the games went to coach Kizer and his family. The GMS Student Council sponsored Sleeping Beauty with a special presentation using puppets. The presenter was from Germany, who had made each of his 12 puppets. He entertained the students for about one hour. We really enjoy being able to have something special for the primary students. They are so well behaved when they come to our building. Although we realize it takes a lot of planning to get those students to the middle school, as buses have to be reserved. We do appreciate Mrs. Shaver and the teachers for their support. The seventh graders in Mrs. Clingan's social studies class have been learning the 75 counties of the state. They had to identify each county on the map and spell each one correctly. The eighth grade social studies classes have been reciting the Gettysburg address; they didn't think they could. They can hardly wait to get started on the presidents. The Student Council assembly will be held April 23 at 1:15. This will give all candidates running for office, or a class representative, the opportunity to give their campaign speech. This is one requirement when seeking a place on the executive board of the Student Council is to make a speech before the student body, as the board is very active in all the assemblies. Several candidates are seeking special positions in the Student Council. Mrs. Clingan really depends upon the officers in the council to assist not only in the assemblies, but in so many other ways for the school. Tuesday, April 15, progress reports were sent home to the parents to be signed and returned by Wednesday, April 16. It is so difficult to really believe that half of the last nine weeks is all we have remaining for this school year. Of course we are excited about the new middle school and very anxious to see the plans for our new home. We realize we will not be starting a new year in the facility, but we are getting anxious about the move. We have some concerns, however, such as if we will be able to have our monthly assemblies. We look forward to that special time together. We hope you realize that you are very important to us, as we do depend upon your support. Your interest and concerns for us is of great value to us, one we treasure. Well, we thank you, depend upon you and look forward to making those Classy Moments for you.
