Melissa Almand of Nevada High School has accepted an academic scholarship to the University of Central Arkansas (UCA) beginning in August.

UCA awards academic scholarships, renewable for four years, based on ACT scores and class rank, as well as National Merit and National Achievement competition.

Almand will receive a univesity scholarship for tuition and fees.

She is the daughter of Bill and Nelwyn Almand of Prescott.

At Nevada she is a senior of distiction. She will graduate in May with highest honors. Almand is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, Beta Club, drug free team, Quiz Bowl, French Club, gifted and talented program, band and Who's Who Among American High School Students.

She has received the Hugh O'Brien Leadership award, National Science Merit award, National History-Government Merit award, National Journalism-Publication Merit award and school awards in geometry, algebra II, French I, word processing, biology and chemistry and she has placed in FBLA business communications and parliamentary procedure competition.

Almand plans to enroll in pre-pharmacy.


Ricardo Young and April Gulley, seniors at Nevada High School, have been awarded technical scholarships at University of Arkansas Community College at Hope.

Each scholarship is based upon an ACT and grade point average plus a recommendation from a school official.

Young is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Young of Rosston. He will be pursuing a degree in welding or heavy equipment operator.

Gulley is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Altheimer Griffin of Hope. She will be pursuing a degree in assoicate of applied science in business tech.


Erica Ellis, a sophomore at the University of Arkansas, was chosen as one of the 20 young women who will represent the Arkansas Razorback baseball team as a diamond doll. They were selected through three lengthy interviews and judged on poise and personality, appearance, desire to work in a service capacity, and a great enthusiasm for Razorback baseball.

Their duties as a diamond doll include: bat girl for both home and visiting teams, hog heaven hostess and rallying enthusiasm from the crowd. During the fall and spring semesters they show recruits and their families the campus and athletic facilities.

Ellis is the daughter of Danny Ellis of Alexander and the late Cathy Clary Ellis of Prescott. She is a post-secondary education major.
