Van Hook has joined the United States Army under the delayed entry program at the recruiting station in El Dorado. The program gives young men and women the opportunity to delay enlistment in the army for up to one year before reporting to basic military training. The enlistment gives the new soldier the option to learn a new skill, travel and become eligible to receive as much as $30,000 toward a college education. After completion of basic training, soldiers receive advanced individual training in their career specialty. Van Hook, a student at Prescott High School, will report to Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C., for military basic training on July 30. He is the son of James H. Van Hook and Willie Mae Van Hook, both of Prescott. Chabli R. Hayden, currently serving in the United States Navy as an air traffic controller at Virginia Beach, Va., successfully passed the exam that promoted him to the class E-5 position. Chabli, having been in the military for four and one half years is studying to become a naval officer. A 1992 honor graduate of Prescott High School, he is the son of Dale and Brenda Hayden of Prescott. PV2 Quentin J. Fowers of Waldo and PV2 Billy D. Hamilton of Prescott have been promoted to the rank of Private First Class and PV1 Robert L. Jones Jr. of Hope has been promoted to the rank of Private Second Class. All are members of Company A (-) 1-153d Infantry at Prescott, Arkansas Army National Guard. PV2 Flowers entered the military on January 24, 1995, and has received the Army Service Ribbon. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Will J. Flowers of Waldo and a graduate of Nevada High School. He is assigned as an auto rifleman. PV2 Hamilton entered the military on June 28, 1996, and has received the Army Service Ribbon. He is an assistant machine gunner. PV1 Jones entered the military on December 27, 1988, and has received the following medals: Army Service Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Arkansas Service Medal.
