Two Students Are National Merit WinnersPublished Wednesday, April 16, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneThe United States Achievement Academy has announced that Kelley Wren and Carlos Franklin from Prescott have been named United States National Awards winners. Wren, who attends Prescott High School, received the honor for cheerleading. She was nominated by Laura Ward, who is cheerleader sponsor at the school. Franklin, a student at Prescott Middle School, received the honor in business education. He was nominated by xxx Tanner, a teacher at the school. They both will appear in the United States Achievement Academy official yearbook, which is published nationally. The academy selects USAA winners upon the exclusive recommendation of teachers, coaches, counselors and other qualified sponsors and upon the standards of selection set forth by the academy. The criteria for selection are a student's academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, responsibility, enthusiasm, motivation to learn and improve, citizenship, attitude and cooperative spirit, dependability, and recommendation from a teacher or director. Wren is the daughter of Steve and Janis Wren of Prescott. Her grandparents are Noel and Jessie Cummings and Joe and Kay Wren all of Prescott. Franklin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesie Dixon of Prescott. His grandparents are Lucille McDuffie and Perrine Franklin, both of Prescott.
