Kadodacho Club

Published Wednesday, April 23, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

The Kadohadacho Club met Wednesday, April 16, in the Gurdon Municipal Building at 2:00 p.m. with eight members and one visitor present.

President Anita Lynch presided and opened the meeting by leading the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag. Maurine Stricklin gave the inspirational thought.

Carolyn Kuhn introduced the speaker, Thannis Phillips, a retired English teacher from Southern Louisiana. She and her husband moved to Arkadelphia to make their home. They soon found they were not ready for retirement.

Instead of a life of ease they applied to go to China to teach English in a college there. They were accepted and lived five years in China. They have been back twice since then. They will return this summer to teach English to a group of Chinese Christians.

Mrs. Phillips compared the Chinese culture with that of ours. She stated many women are still treated like property.

There are 24-hour daycare centers for the young children of working parents. Children are only with their parents over the weekend. The elders are well taken care of by their family, she reported.

She built our understanding of China as more than just a country we read about.

A question and answer session followed her talk.

The hostesses, Gladys Sherman and Mrs. Stricklin, served delicious angel food cake topped with fresh strawberries and nuts, and coffee during the social hour. A lovely bouquet of pansies centered the table where the group gathered for the meeting and refreshments.

Mrs. Lynch called for the business session. She gave the names of those who will write up a history of the club from 1987 to present time.

She asked the members to be prepared to discuss the continuation or demise of the Kadohadacho Club at the meeting in May.

Mrs. Kuhn told of impressing upon her students the need of volunteering. She stated some of the girls would like to plant roses and other flowers on the median on Main Street. She asked for $60 from the club. A discussion followed and it was decided to find out who would take care of the plants before making a decision.

There being no other business the meeting adjourned by repeating the Club Collect.
