Humane Society Meets With Club

Published Wednesday, April 23, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

Gurdon's Municipal Building was the meeting place of the Hilltop 4- H Club on Monday afternoon, April 14, with 30 to 35 members and leaders attending. Each member brought dog or cat food for the Humane Society of Clark County.

Special guests were Mary Cabe and Anita Cabe. A presentation of a squirrel feeder and a bird house, made by 4-H members, were given them in honor of their support and interest of the club.

The program was given by the Humane Society of Clark County with Mrs. Sammie McClure, David McClure and `Tramples' as its representatives.

David and Tramples performed an obedience routine.

Obedience classes are one of the ways the Humane Society brings in finances to provide for the dogs and cats under its care. Obedience classes are held for nine weeks in the fall and in early spring each year and could be held in Gurdon if pet owners want them.

Mrs. McClure gave an informative talk on the Humane Society of Clark County. The shelter is located at the fenced-in tennis courts of the Human Development Center in Caddo Valley.

This has proved to be a good arrangement for the residents of the Human Development Center as the residents have opportunity to interact with the dogs. They also feed and clean the pens three days a week.

Mrs. Dee Ross, shelter supervisor, with volunteer assistance, cares for them the other days.

Cats are kept by Megan Riley of Arkadelphia.

There is a limit of ten at each shelter, because of lack of space and volunteers. When space runs out foster care is provided in Gurdon and Arkadelphia, but currently all pens are full with more than 200 on the waiting list.

In the past years, 25 dogs have been rescued from Gurdon by the Humane Society. Most found homes.

The society strongly encourages spaying and neutering of pets to eliminate needless suffering of animals. Fifteen to 20 million healthy animals are killed each year due to over population.

Should anyone want to adopt a pet the society currently has about 20 dogs and several cats. All dogs have had shots, adults have been spayed or neutered and they are on heartworm preventatives.
