Classy Moments

Published Wednesday, April 30, 1997 in the Gurdon Times

We are really getting excited at Gurdon Middle School. It is becoming more apparent that our new building is becoming a reality. GMS teachers met with the architect as he showed the proposed floor plan and explained various aspects of the facility. Of course, there were several questions asked, but the future of GMS looks great.

We are so grateful to the Cabe Foundation for helping with the fulfillment of this interest for generations to come. Changes are taking place, but these changes will be for each and everyone in Gurdon. Gurdon citizens (and those in this area) have always shown pride in the schools here by the various ways support has been shown. A future is ahead of us to continue to be proud of the Gurdon School District.

The assembly conducted by the GMS Student Council was enjoyed by the students and the various visitors in attendance. The citizen students were Nicky Campbell of the fifth grade; Christiana Taylor, sixth; and eighth grader Stephanie Childres. The staff member of the month was Mrs. Green, a first year teacher of the fifth grade. Joe Plyler presented Mrs. green with lovely flowers.

Mrs. Green and Mrs. Davies, the senior and junior high cheerleader sponsors, introduced the junior high 1997-98 squad to the audience. We are looking forward to a good year, as these students are full of the Gurdon Spirit and ready to get started.

The Student Council presented Mrs. Gattis with a new swivel stool/chair for her office. Kenneth O'Connell read a poem written especially for Mrs. Gattis. Wednesday was National Secretary Day. We have a very special secretary and we wanted her to know how much she is appreciated. So set back and relax, Mrs. Gattis.

The candidates running for an office or representative for the Student Council gave their speeches. Several delivered their speeches like pros. A good job was performed by all candidates. The election took place on Thursday.

The results were: sixth grade representatives -- Jessie Bryant, Jill Plyler and Davion Williams; seventh grade representatives -- Tracey Coplen, Andi Finley and Christina Taylor; and eighth grade representative, Jamie Warren. Officers are Sharonda Bell, parliamentarian; Heath Griddin, reporter; Lacey Jester, treasurer; Bonnie Ferguson, secretary; Stephanie Kilts, vice president and Lyndi Esclante, president. The installation of the new officers will take place in May.

The senior high jazz band entertained the audience with several numbers of good music. This is a group of band students who take the extra time to put in extra practice and work to perform at various functions for our schools. The program was a big hit.

The student body heard `Voices from the Dead' from former drug addicts. They listened as they heard how the presenters got hooked on drugs, some of the experiences, and how they got off drugs. A program we hope will greatly benefit our students.

GMS is a busy place, always looking for ways of improvement and ways to motivate our students in helping us make those Classy Moments at GMS.
