Nevada Elementary fifth grader Brittany Daniel earned the opportunity to purchase a beautiful porcelain doll with Blue Jay Bucks received in recognition of behavioral and academic achievement. Blue Jay Bucks are given based on a point system. The student accumulates bucks by excelling in any or all of several categories. At the end of the nine-week period, these bucks may be spent at a special Blue Jay Bucks store. Daniel placed her doll on layaway and saved for three nine-week periods in order to claim her as her own.

Shantal Henry, daughter of Leroy and Sharon Henry, bought a new bicycle with Blue Jay Bucks earned over three nine-week grading periods. Henry had a winning combination, outstanding behavior and academic achievement, which gave her the `bucks.'

`Miss Peaches' Smith, a gifted storyteller and writer, visited Nevada Elementary School on April 17. Miss Peaches' writing career began as a result of her storytelling. She participated in the Wildwood International Children's Festival as a storyteller. Through storytelling and storybooks, she has a unique ability to reach children of all ages. She is pictured with two Nevada Elementary students, Nicole Hollimon, left, and Richard Johnson.

Cindy Foster, a representative of Southwestern Bell Telephone Pioneers, visited Nevada Elementary School's kindergarten on April 17. She presented a personalized book entitled, `I Like Me,' to each kindergarten child. This distribution is part of a multi-faceted program of community service performed by the Southwestern Bell Pioneers each year.
