PHS Takes Merchants' Relays Last Thurdsay

Published Wednesday, April 30, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The 23rd annual Prescott Merchants Relays were held last Thursday.

In spite of the threatening weather, cooler temperatures and a slight rain, several area athletes reached the qualifying standards for their state meet, coach Eddie Jackson said.

The Wolves accomplished this in some events, but more importantly the Wolves gave a supreme effort and won their own meet.

"We have been in the shadows of Stamps and Mineral Springs all spring," Jackson said, "but when the Wolves got a chance to run on their own track, they performed very well and scored 102 points."

The Wolves will be competing in the 7AA District meet this week at home.

The field events and running prelims were to be held on Tuesday. The finals are set for Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

"With a great effort from every squad man, the Wolves could win their 15th conference title," Jackson said. "We will need some extra effort to finish in the top two of some events, which we are not already qualified for state, if we plan on making a run at the state title."
