In spite of being out of condition and not training, Stacy Stockton qualified for the state track meet in the 3200 meter run.

According to Coach Cecily Butler, Stockton had been sidelined with a tendon problem and not been training for track. Yet when the Merchant Relays rolled around Thursday, April 24, Stockton asked to run the mile, just for fun.

She finished third with a personal best time of 5:54. Butler joked with her about running the 3200 meters, never expecting her to take it seriously. However, about 45 minutes before the meet started, Stockton asked Butler to sign her up for it.

She asked the coach how she should pace herself for the race as she had never ran it before. Butler gave her some sound advice -- stay on the heels of the leader.

Stockton listened and finished second with a state qualifying time of 12:56.

While Stockton's feat was astounding, she wasn't the only Wolverette to do well. Jessica Hildebrand recorded a personal best in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 17.16, which was also good enough for first place in the event.

Hildebrand was third in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 52.52, while Christy Adams was seventh, finishing in 58.91.

The 400 meter relay team of C. Harris, Hildebrand, L. Stuckey and N. Martin finished fifth with a time of 55.47, while the 1600 meter relay team was sixth in 4:57. The 1600 team includes Stuckey, Hildebrand, Adams and G. Gulley.

Powell recorded a personal best time of 3:05 in the 800 meter run, while Gulley set a personal record of 28.84 in the 200 meter dash.

Butler's Cubettes were fourth overall in the Junior Scrapper Relays. District rivals Nashville and De Queen were first and second respectively.

Bridgett Peters was sixth in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:09, while the two mile relay team of Megan Reeder, Kaylor Sorrells, Jennifer Thornton and Peters was fourth, finishing the race in 12:11.

Nicole Martin was fifth in the 200 dash with a 28.95 mark. The mile relay team of Jeania Haynie, Martin, Laura Williams and Peters was second, finishing the circuit in 4:39.

Donisha Williamson was fourth in the shot put with a toss of 27-0.

Martin came in fourth in the long jump at 14-5, with Traci Graham right on her heels with a leap of 14-2 1/2.

Graham also finished second in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4-8.
