Published Wednesday, April 30, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

Prescott's Wolverette softball team made history Tuesday, April 22.

On this day, the Wolverettes posted their first district win, whipping Fordyce 16-6. However, they dropped the second game 16-5 to the Lady Bugs.

The game was called because of the 10-run rule in the fifth, when the Wolverettes held a 10-run lead.

The Lady Bugs opened with a run in the first, but the Wolverette bats were hot as four scored.

Fordyce tied the game in the top of the second, but was doubled in scoring when the Wolverettes scored four more to make it 8-4.

In fact, the Wolverettes scored four runs in each of the four frames they batted in. Fordyce added single scores in the third and fourth.

The Wolverettes recorded 20 hits, while Fordyce had seven.

Stacy Stockton tripled twice, scoring three times. Jesna Cornelius smacked two singles and a double, scoring all three times as well. Mandy Cox singled twice, but scored four times. Lea Thornton belted twin singles, a three-bagger and went deep with a homer, while scoring four times.

Laura Culpepper singled, tripled and scored. Christy Martin singled and scored the final run for Prescott.

Melissa Beavert singled, as did Rita Fountain, Kaci Ammons and Jessica Hendrix. Lakisha Stuckey singled twice.

The second game didn't go nearly as well as the first, as the Lady Bugs were victorious.

Stockton singled, doubled and tripled, while scoring once. Cox belted two singles and scored, while Thornton singled and scored. Stuckey smacked a trio of one-baggers, but crossed home only once. Ammons also singled twice, and scored.

Others getting hits in the game were: Cornelius, with a single; Culpepper, who had a single, double and triple; Beavert, single; Martin, two singles; and Fountain, two singles.
