Published Wednesday, May 7, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The Arkansas Highway Police held its third annual bass tournament at DeGray Lake April 19 and 20.

Winning first place were Cpl. Mike Bounds and Oris Kemp, both of Texarkana. They caught a total of 22.02 pounds of bass. They also came in with the biggest -- a 3.76-pounder.

Other results in the two-day event: Pfc. Ned Ward of Prescott and Trooper Tim Land of Emmet, second place with 17.88 pounds; Pfc. Steve Atchley of Hope and John Gould of Arkadelphia, third place with 16.6 pounds; Sgt. Benton Fincher and Bill Sharp, both of Hope, fourth place with 15.38 pounds; and Cpl. Gary Revels of Lockesburg and Gene Steed of Camden, fifth place with 12.45 pounds.

The highway police decided to donate the entry money remaining after the prizes were awarded to a worthy cause in the sponsoring district. $3,000 was donated to Water Springs Ranch of Texarkana, a home for children in need.
