PHS Track Squad Comes Together To Take District Title

Published Wednesday, May 7, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The 1997 spring track and field season for the Wolves was marked with bad weather, injuries and other assortments of bad luck, but the team put it all togehter for two days last week in the 7AA conference meet for the district championship.

On Tuesday the field event depth belonged to Prescott as the Wolves racked up 75 points in the field and six more in the 4x800 for a day-one total of 81 points.

When the running finals got underway on Thursday they added another 108 points to lead the field of 7AA schools. Nashville edged out Fordyce by one point (111-110) for the runner-up spot.

This conference title was number 15 under coach Eddie Jackson's tenure, who has begun his work at Hampton.

In addition to dominating this meet, the Wolves put themselves in good shape to make a run at the state title this Saturday at Clarksville. Coach Jackson said he would be coaching by phone this weekend and coach Ed Tyree would be working with the state qualified athletes in preparation for the state meet.

The Wolves have the potential to stay with Heber Springs if everyone does what they are capable of doing on the state level.

Even though he is now working at Hampton, coach Jackson said he will join the team on their trip to Clarksville and it would be a fitting end if the Wolves could put together a state championship on Saturday.
