PHS Boys Drop Game To DeQueen; Finish 3rdBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, May 7, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Two runs in the bottom of the seventh cost the Wolves against De Queen on the diamond, Tuesday, April 29. Those two runs gave the Leopards a 3-2 win over Prescott, dropping the Wolves' record to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in 7AA conference play. De Queen, on the other hand, improved to 12-6 and 5-1. For the most part, it was a pitcher's duel between Ross Cowling and Marshall. Cowling went the distance and took the loss, dropping his record to 6-2. He faced 30 batters, giving up the three runs on five hits and five walks. He struck nine batters out. Marshall, though, tangled with 29 Wolves. He gave up two runs on three hits and two walks, while fanning 12. The Wolves, batting in the top of the first, sent four to the plate, with three returning empty handed. Jared Yates managed a walk. The Leopards, though, got two on, Sullivan walked and Martin doubled, but left both stranded as the next three did nothing against Cowling. The second frame was a mirror image of the first for Prescott, with Al Formby reaching on an error, but being left by himself. It was much the same for De Queen, but this time the Leopards only left one runner stranded. Al Johnston singled in the third for Prescott, but was the third Wolf left stranded at first. First blood was drawn by the Leopards, though, as Martin and Ward reached on an error. The error to Ward allowed Martin to score and gave the home team a 1-0 lead. With two out, however, the Leopards saw the bases loaded as Jim and Tim Mobbs both walked. But the bags were left packed when Pearce went down on strikes. Prescott's bats were still frigid in the fourth, as three went to the plate and all returned to the bench. Barnes was fanned to start De Queen's fourth with Stewart recording a single. However, Sullivan grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the frame. Formby, Heath Duke and Ben Jones took Marshall on in the fifth, but were struck out as the De Queen hurler had his stuff. Cowling fanned Martin and Ward, before Atkins reached on an error. Jim Mobbs, though, lifted a fly ball to end the frame. Prescott's bats came alive for a while in the top of the sixth. Stockton opened by reaching on an error. Al Johnston and Yates singled, with Stockton scoring on Yates' one bagger. A wild pitch brought Johnston home and gave Prescott a 2-1 lead. Aside from a Barnes single, Cowling struck out the side. Jernigan, Jones and Jimmy Stockton all flied out in the top of the seventh for the Wolves. The bottom fell out for Prescott when Sullivan drew a walk and Martin singled. Sullivan scored when a pick off attempt went awry and tied the game at 2-2. The game ended when Ward singled, driving Martin in. The Leopards forfeited the junior varsity game. The Prescott jv team ended its season with a 7-2 record.
