WCG Holds ConventionPublished Wednesday, May 14, 1997 in the Gurdon TimesThe Women of the Church of God (WCG) held their 1997 convention May 2-3 at the Snow Springs campground in Hot Springs. The theme of the convention was "Treasure these Values". Five of Gurdon's members attended the convention, Eula Wilson, Janet Toland, Jeannie Burchfield, Shirley Smithpeters and Velvet Gonzales. The featured speaker was Laura Shallenberger, the stewardship coordinator for the national WGC. Her first message was entiled "An Attitude of Stewardship in the Community", taken from Luke 10:25-37. She summarized by providing the three steps to becoming a good neighbor: 1. be aware of your surroundings, 2. eliminate excuses and 3. begin today. At the Friday evening banquet special music was provided by members of the El Dorado Church of God, while the Hot Springs and Little Rock women provided the food. Laura's message at the banquet was entitled "Key the Main Thing,", based on Luke 10:38-42 and Deuteronomy 6:5-9. She summarized this lesson by giving three realizations concerning the "Main Thing", 1. our relationship with Christ is the good part, 2. the good part can never be taken away, and 3. it is the wisdom and duty of each one of us to choose the good part. Following the banquet, the ladies enjoyed a time of games let by the Van Buren Church of God. Saturday began with a delicious breakfast served by the Little Rock church. During the morning service, the officers were installed. Special music was provided by Janet Toland of Gurdon. During Saturday's service, Laura presented a lesson entitled, "Living Out the Main Thing in the Main Stream," based on Philippians 2"1-8. In conclusion she gave instructions for doing this: 1. never let selfishness or conciet be your motive, 2. always regard others as more important than yourself, and 3. do not limit your attention to your personal interest. The convention concluded with all members partaking in communion. The women will unite again on September 26-27 for the annual State Prayer Retreat.
