It's been a busy year for the Gurdon Future Farmers of America.

The FFA members competed in several contests during the school year and brought home plenty of hardware for their efforts. These efforts were honored Tuesday, May 6, at the Gurdon High School cafetorium at the annual FFA Banquet.

At the Clark County Fair, Gurdon FFA members won four of five categories in the hog classes, as well as having their animals named grand champions in several divisions.

From there, they competed in the district fair at Hope, where they had even more grand champions named.

Then came the state fair, where the students brought home a number of ribbons.

On the academic level, the FFA teams also fared well during the year. The meats team was third overall at the state contest, while the crops team came in 11th. The agri mechanics crew finished 12th in the state event, while the forestry team missed going to state by four points, after a seventh place finish in the district. The parliamentary procedure squad finished third in the district event.

Emily Waymack, State Southeast District Vice President, from Cabot, was the featured speaker.

She told the students how important it is for her to be organized as she travels quite a bit as district vp.

In fact, Waymack was at the 81st General Assembly in Little Rock on a regular basis.

She said there are some interesting plans for the next state FFA convention, including more motivational speakers, a laser light show, shorter sessions and a trip to the moon.

Waymack told her fellow FFA members they need to set their goals high and pursue them. "Believe in yourself and never give up," she said.

Following her talk, awards in various categories were passed out.
