Decathalon And Heptathlon Set For Next Week

Published Wednesday, May 14, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune

The annual high school decathlon/heptathlon will be held at Clarksville on Wednesday and Thursday next week.

The Curley Wolves will be well represented with Cedric Flemons, who finished in the top 10 last year, and Jason Morrow, the Wolve's record-setting vaulter.

The girls' heptathlon is a new event for 1997.

The one-day pentathlon has been increased to a two-day, six-event contest.

The boys' competition is made up of the 100, long jump, high jump, shot put and 400 meter on day one. Day two is the toughest with the 120 hurdles, triple jump, discus, pole vault and the 1600.

Morrow finished in 15th place last year. Coach Eddie Jackson says he is so much stronger at this point with the vault, 400, long jump and mile run. He is projected to score close to 7,000 points.

Flemons is also stronger and very consistent in many events, according to Jackson. If he can repeat some of his performance he should be a factor in this grueling two-day event, the coach said.
