PHS Runners-Up In State MeetPublished Wednesday, May 14, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneFor the second consecutive year the Wolves finished with a runner- up trophy from the State AA Track and Field Championship Meet. The meet was held on the new Olympic-type facility at Clarksville this past Saturday. The Wolves scored 74 points, which will win most state meets year in and year out, but Heber Springs racked up 48 points in the field events and scored enough on the track to hold off the Wolves for the title. It was almost a repeat of the 1991 state meet, but without the controversy of the finish line. In that meet, the judges missed O.J. Tidwell's eight-point 300 hurdle performance which enabled the Panthers to win by four points. The 1997 championship was not as close as Heber got 40 points out of two events and the Wolves outscored Osceola, the third place team, by 30 or more points. Channing Butler, a senior three-time all-state performer, led the Wolves with 24 1/2 points. Cedric Flemons, another senior competitor, was able to gain All-State honors for his third time by helping the man's relay win the last event of the night. Jason Morrow, the Wolves record-breaking vaulter, established another school record with a 14-foot vault. Listed below are the scoring performances for the Wolves. Long jump: Rashad Johnson, fourth place. Pole vault: Jason Morrow, third place. 4x100 relay: Team of C. Hopson, C.D. Flemons, R. Johnson and C. Butler, second place. 120 hurdles: Channing Butler, second place and C.D. Flemons, fifth place. 4x200-meter relay: C. Hopson, R. Johnson, A. Johnston and Clavin Flemons, fourth place. 400-meter run: Channing Butler, second place and C.D. Flemons, third place. 800-meter run: J. Morrow, second place. 200-meter dash: C. Hopson, third place and C. Butler, fourth place. 4x400-meter relay: Calvin Flemons, R.D. Flemons, J. Morrow and Channing Butler, first place. For the fourth consecutive year, the Wolves have won the AA mile relay. "We were able to repeat this year with a ninth grader (Calvin Flemons) running the scratch leg," coach Jackson said. This win qualifies this team for the annual Meet of Champions, which was to be held at Cabot on Wednesday, May 14. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
