Prescott Tennis Team Falters At State TiltBY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, May 14, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune Two groups of Prescott's tennis team made it to the second round in the state tournament at Conway, Thursday, May 1. Otherwise, though, the Wolfpack netters had their problems. Matt Brannon went down to Valley View's Scott McDonald 6-2, 6-2, while Scott Graham beat Truman's Kevin Rouse 6-4, 6-2 in their match. Jessica Hendrix won one game against Fountain Lake's Katrina Yates, as she succumbed 6-0, 6-1. The tandem of Stacy Stockton and Traci Graham opened with a resounding win as they blasted McGehee's Amanda Williams and Kelly Shelton 6-0, 6-0. Scott Stokes and Sammy Lowdermilk, though, fell victim to Beebe's Taylor Rettig and Guy Choate in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Scott Graham had problems in the second round of the tourney as he was shut out, 6-0, 6-0, by Chad Johnson of Atkins. The duo of Stockton and Graham went down in two sets to the eventual state champs, Kristen Wright and Kirston Henry of Pulaski Academy. With the first set tied 6-6, Stockton and Graham were serving with triple set point, but couldn't put the eventual champs away. They lost the tiebreaker 7-4 and the second set 6-0. But, on April 23, the Wolfpack netters took team titles for the boys and girls. Scott Graham was the singles champ, with Brannon the runner up. Jason and Jeremy Morrow were the doubles champ in the district tilt, while Lowdermilk and Stokes were third. However, Lowdermilk and Stokes took the place of the Morrows who were unable to attend the state tourney. Stockton and Graham captured the district doubles crown, while Hendrix was the runner up in singles. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
