Curley Wolves Battle To Second In District (cont)BY JOHN MILLERPublished Wednesday, May 14, 1997 in the Nevada County Picayune nd Searcy were all fanned. The Panthers started to rally in the top of the seventh as three runs scored. Buckley walked and Savell reached on an error. Though Green fanned, Miller doubled the two in. D. Eaves followed with a twin-bagger to bring Miller across before C. Eaves went down swinging. East and Heigle walked to pack the bags, but all were left waiting as Crabtree grounded out to end the game. The win not only advanced Prescott to the district finals for the second straight year and earned the Wolves a second trip to the state tourney, it was also the first time the team managed to beat Fouke. PRESCOTT 5 NASHVILLE 10 Knowing they were going to the state tourney may have caused the Wolves to have a letdown. Or, they may have just been worn out from playing three games in three days as they dropped a 10-5 decision to Nashville in the district finals Wednesday, May 7. Jones took the loss for Prescott, only making it through two-and-a-third innings. He faced 16 and gave up six runs on five hits and five walks while striking one out. Yates finished the last three-and-two-thirds innings, tangling with 22 Scrappers, giving up four runs on four hits and six walks. Yates fanned three. C. Reed was the winner on the hill, going the distance against 31 Wolves. He gave up five runs on two hits and five walks, while fanning seven. Other than a Johnston walk, the Wolves were quiet in the first. This was pretty much the scenario for Nashville in its opening frame as well. The Wolves got things going in the second with four runs scoring. Cowling fanned before Yates was hit by a pitch and Webb walked. Duke also walked to load the bases, but Pipkin fanned for the second out. Stockton reached on an error while Yates and Webb scampered home. Jones walked to again pack the bags. Johnston followed with a single to drive in Duke and Stockton. Jones found himself caught in no- man's land between second and third to end the attack. Two walks and a pair of singles gave the Scrappers their first score of the game. A couple of errors and ground balls allowed Williams to complete the circuit and ended Prescott's scoring for the remainder of the contest. On the other hand, the Scrappers offense came alive with six runs in the bottom of the third. After Martin opened by grounding out, McGill singled and both Fincher and C. Reed walked to load the bases. Rowland singled, driving in McGill and Fincher. McCauley singled to bring in Reed and Rowland. Davis fanned, but Campbell and D. Reed walked. Martin belted a two-run double to bring McCauley and Campbell across. It was one, two, three for the Wolves in the fourth, but the Scrappers added two to their lead. Fincher grounded out to start, but C. Reed singled. Rowland and McCauley walked ahead of a single by Davis, bringing Reed and Rowland in. Campbell and D. Reed flied out to end things. Williams singled to start the fifth, but the promise was short-lived as the next three batters went down in order. The Scrapper offense was also shut down in its part of the inning with three up and three down. The sixth was a mirror-image of the fifth for the Wolves as no one could generate a hit. C. Reed, though, ended scoring in the game when he took one out of the park. The Scrappers managed to load the bases, but couldn't push another run across. An error allowed Johnston to reach in the seventh with one down, but he was thrown out trying for second. When Williams flied out, the game ended. Still, the Wolves head to the class AA State Tournament at Jerry Moore Field on the Harding University campus in Searcy. Bald Knob is the tourney host. The tourney began at 5 p.m. Tuesday. The championship game is scheduled to be played at 7 o'clock Friday night. Search | Nevada County Picayune by date | Gurdon Times by date |
