NHS Names Top Grads; Graduation Is ThursdayPublished Wednesday, May 14, 1997 in the Nevada County PicayuneTwenty-one seniors at Nevada High School will graduate Thursday night with honors -- including 10 with highest honor and three with high honor. The highest honor graduates are (in order of highest grade point average) Krista Niemeyer, Melissa Almand, Laurie Herring, Lindsay Walthall, Amie Williams, Joannie Bailey, Kristi Patton, Crystal Lowe, Tony Key and Julie Clements. High honor graduates are Billy Dillard, Shannon Hicks and Terrell Page. Honor graduates are Eric Murphy, Marilyn Murphy, Brandi Mounce, Brandi Tatom, Matt Tucker, LeAnn Landry, April Carlton and Jill Butler. Graduation ceremonies will begin at 7:00 in the newly-air conditioned gymnasium. This year's ceremonies will include a speaker, Kenneth Muldrew, of Hope. Muldrew was the first Nevada High School principal in the new facilities that opened in the fall of 1988. Muldrew is currently assistant superintendent of the Hope School District. The district is made up of five former school districts -- Bodcaw, Cale, Laneburg, Oak Grove and Willisville. Niemeyer is the daughter of Steven and Sherri Niemeyer of Route 6, Prescott. Her school activities included Student Council president, FBLA secretary, Beta Club reporter, drug team teen leader, French Club, Champs, yearbook staff, quiz bowl, gifted and talented and United Methodist Youth Group. She participated in the Prescott Community Choir for two years, went on Methodist Missions to San Antonio, Texas, and Kansas City, Mo., and participated in the Nevada High School play. Niemeyer's honors include Who's Who Among American High School Students, fourth place in business law at District IV FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) 1996, and fourth place in accounting at District IV FBLA 1997. She was accepted to Fulbright School of Public Affairs at the University of Arkansas in 1996, was chosen as a page for Sen. Mike Ross, and she will attend the Univeristy of Arkansas at Fayetteville on an alumni and four-year tuition scholarship, where she will major in law and political science. Almand is the daughter of Bill and Nelwyn Almand of Route 6, Prescott. She was a member of FBLA, Beta Club, drug free team, quiz bowl, French Club, gifted and talented program, band and publications. Almand was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. She was winner of the Hugh O'Brian Leadership Award, National Science Merit Award, National History-Government Merit Award, National Journalism- Publication Merit Award, U.S. Achievement Academy Award, and Presidential Fitness Award. She was named to the navy honors program. Herring is the daughter of Terry Jarvis of Willisville and dickey Herring of Walkerville. Her school activities included FBLA, drug free team, gifted and talented, quiz bowl, Beta Club, French Club, band and publications. Herring was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. She won the Presidential Academic Fitness Award, Navy Honors Program Award, alumni scholarship to SAU, National Science Merit Award, National History Award, National Journalism Award and U.S. Achievement Award. Walthall is the daughter of Bobby and Nancy Walthall of Route 3, Waldo. At Nevada she was active in FBLA, Beta Club, drug free team, French Club, band and publications. She was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. Walthall received the Presidential Academic Fitness Award, National Science Merit Award, National History Award, National Journalism Award, and U.S. Achievement Award. She was named to the navy honors program. She received a leadership scholarship to SAU. She won first place in the Voice of Democracy Essay. ","","","" Route 1, Buckner. She was elected class president, and she was a member of FBLA, Beta Club, French Club, drug team, Student Council, mock trial, band, journalism, AP English, gifted and talented and quiz bowl. She was publications editor. Williams is a highest honors graduate, an honor roll student. She was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. Williams is the daughter of James and Phyllis Williams of Route 1, Buckner. She was elected class president, and she was a member of FBLA, Beta Club, French Club, drug team, Student Council, mock trial, band, journalism, AP English, gifted and talented and quiz bowl. She was publications editor. Williams has received the Accounting I Award, World History Award, Speech Award, Geometry Award, Keyboarding Award, Physical Science Award, and Presidential Academic Fitness Award. She was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. Bailey is the daughter of Ray and Leah Bailey of Route 3, Waldo. She was a member of FBLA, Beta Club, Art Club, French Club (president), drug team, basketball and track. She was vice president of her class and captain of the cheerleaders, and she was the school's mascot. Patton is the daughter of Kevin and June Hamilton of Route 3, Rosston. Her activites include Senior Beta Club president, FBLA reporter and chairman of the Arkansas Children's Hospital and March of Dimes drives. She was a member of drug free team, French Club, gifted and talented, band, varsity cheerleader (co-captain), basketball and drama. Patton's honors include FBLA entrepreneurship team second place; FBLA District IV who's who in FBLA; highest honors, state honorable mention; UCA all-star cheerleader; and Miss Photogenic and Miss Congeniality of Nevada County. She has received the National Science Merit Award, and is a recipient of a UCA scholarship. She is listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. Lowe is the daughter of Milton and Annie Lowe of Rosston. She has been involved in Beta Club, FFA (junior advisor and reporter), gifted and talented, journalism (editor), quiz bowl, FTA, FBLA, French Club, mock trial and band. She participated in basketball, track, was an elementary office aide and she was fire marshall at the school. Key is the son of Joe and Mary Key of Hope. He participated in high school athletics, was a member of FBLA, Senior Beta Club, Art Club, French Club and drug team. He is listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. Clements is the daughter of Billy and Faye Clements of Route 1, Emmet. She has been a member of Beta Club, FBLA, band, drug team, AP chemistry, AP English and Champs.
